arp 257 is the first member of dr. arp's class irregular clumps. his atlas
note was "galaxies joined by segment of thin arc". that is just barely
detectable in my primary image, but can be seen easily in the high-contrast 2x
detail image below. that image shows the complex knots and streamers
surrounding this strange object. also shown is a low-contrast 4x image of
the multiple core of the s galaxy.
