Arp 231 is in the class Concentric Rings, but its most obvious characteristic is
the absorption band dividing it in half. In fact, the Index Catalog (IC)
lists it as IC 1575A and B, indicating that is was assumed to be a very close
galaxy pair. The Atlas note is "faintest arc extends about 2' S of nucleus
with absorption". That arc and the closer one to the northwest can be seen
in the negative image. The absorption band can be seen best in the 2x
detail image.
The skinny amorphous galaxy
southeast of Arp 231 is MCG-1-3-4 and the edge-on in the northeast corner is MAC
0044-0402.
